My Profile

First, I need to squelch a rumor.  No, I am not a General Authority with too much time on his hands, but I can understand the confusion.
Nor am I a woman masquerading as a man. (See Portia, in Merchant of Venice, or  Terry, in Just One of the Guys.)

Questions I have been asked:

What do you consider “middle-aged”? I am middle-aged, if I live to be 100.  If I live to be 70, then I crossed the middle about 15 years ago.  (Of course Alice Cooper called 18 the middle of life, and he's 63) They say you are only as old as you feel – so most mornings I am 82.

What is the purpose of your blog?  Purpose?  There is supposed to be a purpose? Now you tell me. I guess the purpose is simply to write down things that make me think, and make me smile. There is no agenda. If I get a smile from my wife, all the better.

Where were you raised?  I was raised within the shadows of the everlasting hills.

Whence then cometh your wisdom?  (Clever Job 28:20, got it.) I have been fortunate in my life to do many things and go many places.  You can pick up a lot from paying attention, and reading, and listening, and studying, and praying etc.  I also feel sometimes that the “veil” they gave me when I came to this earth is more like a venetian blind than most.

Are you an active member of the LDS church?  Absolutely. I am rock-solid and fully committed to the church and the gospel.  I’m there with my EC and the FOML every Sunday.  Because that is how we roll in the MMM household. White shirts and ties. Soft seats.

The reason I am an active member of the church is best stated by Paul in the famous “scripture chase” scripture Romans 1:16: For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth.
The doctrines and ordinances that make that salvation possible are found within the Church.  You cannot have one without the other.  (Much like Reese’s.  Gotta have both the peanut butter and the chocolate.) So don't start with the "I believe but don't participate" stuff. The doctrines are divine. - our personal application of those doctrines – not so much.

I love and sustain the prophet, as well as the other 14 apostles. (Made you think)  I am fully supportive of them, and you will not ever find me being critical of them, or the things they ask us to do.  I find it fascinating that one of the names John uses to describe Satan is “the accuser of our brethren”. (Rev. 12:10)  I have very little tolerance for that.

Please do not interpret my silliness with a lack of respect of things sacred.  My desire in life is to be fully obedient. Yup.  Fully.  I fail often. Sometimes spectacularly. Yet you can strive for sainthood and have a good laugh once in a while.

The Lord has blessed me with a life beyond what I merit.  My wife and children are amazing. We have been blessed with all of our needs, and most of our wants. (Except  for that whole unresolved beach house want.)

Why the anonymity?  Have you stopped to think that I could be your Home Teacher, or your kid’s seminary teacher, or the crazy conspiracy theorist that won’t shut up in Elder’s Quorum?  I’m not – but I could be.
I know a lot of people, and I don’t want them reading my blog just because they know me.  It is really hard to make fun of them that way. Besides, if Aunt Millie started making comments, I’d be done. We'd all be done.

Is there anything you don’t know?  Sure.  I do not know where Lehi landed.  The beautiful part of this is that I DON’T CARE. Nor do I care where the “real” Cumorah was located.  Nor do I care about “chiasmus” in the Book of Mormon. It is true because it is.  God told me so. That I know.

  7. I've never been more pleased to be guilted by my use of "crap" and "holy hockey-sticks" on a blog. I appreciate your humor and am eager to read more! :)

  9. Wow, the kids are asleep as I should be but I can't because I'm reading your blog. Truly hilarious. I hope you don't mind but I've posted the link to your blog on my blog...and on my Facebook because like green eggs and ham, good things must be shared! Keep up the great work!

  10. Someone sent me your blog and said it reminded them of me. Except you probably have more hair and more money. But don't worry. I'm not bitter.
I plan to study your blogging ways and seek repentance later.

  11. I was going to say "Thanks for the compliment", then I read more carefully and couldn't actually find one. But, I do know about you and your blogging ways. Hair: Yes. Money: Sometimes.

  12. Haha seriously MMM, I'm so glad I discovered your blog. What a delight. And we're already have a super great dialogue... I can't tell you how much I love that! People get way too intense about this stuff, and take it all personal. Not that the gospel's not important-- we just don't need to get fussed at each other if we don't see it exactly from the same perspective. I'm glad we can respectfully talk about the gospel, while possibly disagreeing on some interpretations... and laughing it off. Keep it coming.

  13. Someone who is a member of a writers' guild I belong to came to see my blog when I mentioned a new post, and then she commented. I went to her blog to respond, saw your button, which I clicked, and here I am, laughing my head off and admiring your humor greatly. Thanks, MMM. I believe I'm now going to become an "Extra Valiant Saint." That is, if that is what you call your followers. I'm right, right?

  14. I love your posts. You remind me of a favorite bishop I used to have.

  15. I am so glad I found your blog! I had been subscribed to some of the 'wolf in sheep's clothing' type LDS blogs for a little while, and in the last few months I realized that I had become much more critical of the church and less in tune to the spirit the more I read from them. After I found your blog, I had a much needed attitude adjustment and unsubscribed from the other blogs. I originally thought they were interesting and that it would be beneficial to read a different point of view (there were 2 blogs in particular that I am thinking of) but they ultimately put quite a dent in my testimony that I am currently trying my best to repair. Anyway, the main point I am trying to get at is that I am very grateful to have found this blog and I thank you! Do you have any recommendations for other LDS-related blogs like yours that can inspire and uplift me? I would love to know!

  16. Honestly...I don't care who you are....but you have restored my faith in GOOD mormon blogging...(other than all the crafty mommies out there)I am getting sick of the "disputations among the "saints" & am grateful you publish tiding of peace, humor & TRUTH!!!
    Sooooo spreading the word!

  18. I was pointed towards your blog by a friend who reads regularly... Very glad that I stopped by. Love your writing, frankness and sense of humour. Will definitely be a regular stop of mine from now on!

  19. I simply wanted to say that I am enjoying reading your blog. I discovered it a few months ago, and it has become one of my regular stops.
By the way, MMM, shouldn't it be MAMM? Just sayin'

  20. Manolo: Glad to have you on board! As I understand it, the "a" would not be included in the acronym because it is a hyphenated extension of the word Middle. Thusly MMM, not MAMM. I could be wrong...

  21. OK, I am seriously intrigued by your blog . . . I love the combination of your sense of humor AND your valiantness (is that even a word?) . . . I chose to receive email notifications so even when I don't blog or read my extended family's blogs, I can still come here and read something to smile and make me think . . .

LOL . . . I read your old blog about the family motto, and was about to go in the other room and yell at my husband for having a blog without telling me . . . but I don't really think you are him . . . You don't rave quite enough about your EC . . . ;o)

  23. As a sixteen-year-old saint, your blog really brightens my day. My mom has read every post, and she got me to look at it. Now I've gotten my seminary teacher to read it. This blog is so perfect for youth! You have your entertaining Mormon culture posts and your super amazing spiritual insight posts and some that have a little of both. I wish I could shake your hand and really let you know how much of an inspiration you are. Never has a blog made me laugh and cry. Never stop posting! A new post from you is like getting a New Era in the mail. Thank you SO MUCH.

Thank you so much for the clean humor! It's nice not to feel stained by something profane that was meant to be funny!

  25. I've just found your blog and spent a lot of time (I'm not admitting to how much) reading it and I think you're absolutely hilarious. I'm a stay at home mum with young children and I appreciate the down to earth parenting tied in with the Gospel as that's one of the things I find most frustrating, trying and feeling unsuccessful at teaching them the importance of the Gospel. (My posts on reverence are my favourite!) Any tips on teaching reverence during family prayer and scripture?!

  29. I think I know you....I've seen and enjoyed your type in church and sometimes the veil does seem like a Venetian blind some days...interesting analogy. Lol..I am thoroughly enjoying your blog and am very happy to know that I'm not alone....I miss the mark a lot but I haven't given up .
I wasn't raised in the church. I'm a convert from several years ago with ,I think the kindest bishop ever. I'm hoping to get to the Temple in December so my wife and I can be sealed...I love this church and our missionaries. Thanks for your candor. It's refreshing

  30. My daughter told me about your blog. Today is the day after the election when my hopes and dreams for our nation went into the toilet. So I thought. You gave me a different perspective. Obama and all his democratic cronies do not live in my mormon house. I can not tell me when to pray or who to pray to. He can take my money, take more tax money but he can't take my heart and soul.
Thank you for helping me see what is really important. I needed a little nudge.

  31. I have been a member of the Church since 2008. My husband and I both joined. It has been a long but fulfilling journey. My husband was finally ordained an elder yesterday at Stake Conference up here in Canada, and we hope to be sealed in the Temple early next year. I found your blog and facebook page during the election. I love what you have to say, and I shared your entry on the new curriculum with my husband who is also our ward's Sunday School President. Keep up the great work. I know that when I read your blog I will be edified and entertained all at the same time.

  35. Tom Nicholas posted: I can't decide if I am viewing the blog of a Christian or a Mormon. Very little is said about "Jesus" on your home page, unless you are referring to the "COJCOLDS" which does very little to reference the Savior of this world.

As a nondenom Christian (I read the Bible, that's it) my stomach churns every time I hear a Mormon say "I Love my Church."

...ok, your church....what else? How about the Alpha and Omega?!? How about "I love Jesus Christ" instead? Well, maybe you're not a Christian, but just a Mormon...hmmmmm
